LOVE

As The Fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23)

Written by Molly A. Polly

I have learned quite a bit while looking into the subject of “The Fruit of the Spirit.” In Galatians 5:22-23 The Fruit of the Spirit is listed as such: “but the Fruit of the Spirit “IS” love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, Faith, Meekness temperance: against such there is no law.”

Because all of the above mentioned “IS” the Fruit of the Spirit, I cannot separate love out as a singular Fruit. The Fruit belongs to The Holy Spirit and not of man therefore can only be seen as a whole.

Any believer in Christ can give scripture as to what love is and what love is not just by quoting the all too popular 1 Corinthians 13:4-7. We can also be quick to throw out the Law of “Love thy neighbor as thyself,” Mark 12:31.

However, as stated above from The Bible (KJV), love is in fact that of The Spirit of God; “We love Him, because He first loved us.” 1 John 4:19 Jesus makes this very clear and instructs us to abide in HIM: “Abide in me, and I in you As the branch CANNOT bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the Vine; no more can you, except you abide in me. I am the Vine, you are the branches: he who abides in Me, and I in him, the same brings forth much fruit: FOR WITHOUT ME YOU CAN DO NOTHING,” John 15:4-5.

And in John 14:15-17 Jesus promises us the Comforter, The Holy Spirit, who will reside within us making it possible for us to abide in HIS LOVE and bear HIS FRUIT.

Love

The love of God is beyond human comprehension. But it is displayed openly for all men to see at “The Cross.” What many do not realize is, God’s plan of redemption for mankind was prior to the creation of mankind, “…of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world,” Revelation 13:8.

The “fall of man” was not a surprise for God. He is all knowing. But rather than choosing to live without us, a people He loves, he chose to create us anyway knowing he would become the ultimate, perfect, without blemish sacrifice that would triumphantly defeat Satan.

Knowing what he would have to endure: the pain, agony, disgrace, rejection, of which we cannot fathom, he chose to become this sacrifice so that we could live, and not only live, but live with Him. “According as He has chosen us in Him before the foundation of the world that we should be Holy and without blame before Him in Love…” Ephesians 1:4

In Luke 14:28 Jesus asks a most profound question: “For which of you intending to build a tower sits not down first and counts the cost whether he have sufficient to finish it?” Many will look at this as the cost of discipleship and that analysis would be correct. However, I see Hebrews 3:4 “For every house is built by some man; but He Who built all things is God.” And again I see Hebrews 3:6 “But as Christ as a Son over His Own house; Whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end.”

It is here that I see God truly counted the cost from the foundation, prior to Him building, knowing what he would have to endure and choosing to create us any way. Now that is true Love.

“Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

Hebrews 12:2 (KJV)

The Cross is what binds us together as believers, as brothers and sisters. And it is the Cross that stirs the Love of God in our hearts. “It is the Spirit Who quickens; the flesh profits NOTHING: the words I speak unto you they are spirit and they are Life.” (John 6:63) It is ONLY by The Holy Spirit in which we produce fruit. And if we allow Him his rightful place in our beings we will yield fruit as Jesus our Lord promised. True Love begins at the Cross.
