TL:DR A quick post glance:

  1. So Christ Jesus was under investigation… like, really?
  2. What were Jesus’ crimes?
  3. What were Jesus’ messianic miracles?

Sound juicy? Okay, Ladies. Let’s start.

1. So Christ Jesus was under investigation… like, really?

The investigators, also known as the Pharisees, methodically scrutinized every facet of Christ Jesus’s life, meticulously searching for evidence to uncover the truth of His identity as the true Messiah. They observed His miracles, listened to His words, and analyzed His teachings, determined to unravel the mystery surrounding Him.

The proof of one being the Messiah revolves around captivating miracles that only the Messiah could perform. According to ancient rabbis, they divided miracles into two categories: general miracles anyone empowered by the Spirit of God could perform, and messianic miracles that only the Messiah could perform. Jesus (Yeshua) performed miracles in both categories, which provoked different reactions. At that, the belief in exclusive messianic miracles added significance to Jesus’ actions.

That being said, throughout ancient history, a multitude of men emerged, boldly proclaiming themselves to be the long-awaited Messiah. The Pharisees, driven by a sense of duty, started an intense investigation into those men and the claims and miracles made by Christ Jesus. At that, the charged atmosphere buzzed with whispers of skepticism and anticipation, while the air carried a heavy scent of uncertainty among them.

2. What were Jesus’ crimes… ?

Jesus

Let’s delve into the alleged transgressions (aka crimes) attributed to Christ Jesus, as we immerse ourselves in the captivating milieu of sights, sounds, and sensations surrounding these alleged crimes.

Crime 1

The Pharisees accused Jesus and his disciples of the crime of breaking the Sabbath law by plucking ears of grain. The hostility towards Jesus began when he forgave sins associated with sinners, and now escalated because of his disregard for their strict rules about the Sabbath. While the disciples did not steal, their actions were seen as a violation of the Sabbath law, which forbade any work. According to R. C. H. Lenski, in The Interpretation of St. Matthew’s Gospel, deliberately breaking this law could result in the penalty of death.

In the historical accounts, Jesus defends His disciples, who had broken the law by plucking and eating grain on the Sabbath. He presents three arguments to support His defense. First, He refers to David’s experience when he ate the holy bread from the temple when he was hungry. This illustrates that satisfying hunger is more important than observing a technicality. Second, Jesus points out that the priests in the temple also broke the law in their duties and yet were considered blameless. Lastly, Jesus asserts His own authority as greater than the temple and questions why the Pharisees should criticize if He does not condemn the disciples. Jesus further criticizes the Pharisees for valuing technical observance of the law over showing mercy, stating that if they understood the meaning of “I desire mercy, not sacrifice,” they would not have condemned the guiltless disciples. The problem, Jesus concludes, lies in the merciless hearts of the Pharisees, not in the actions of the disciples.

Crime 2

In the historical accounts, Jesus enters a synagogue on the Sabbath and encounters a man with a paralyzed hand. The Pharisees, eager to find fault with Jesus, question whether it is lawful to heal on the Sabbath. Jesus responds by asking them if they would rescue a sheep that fell into a pit on the Sabbath, implying that doing good is permissible on this day. He then heals the man’s hand (aka Jesus 2nd alleged crime), which angers the Pharisees even more. Frustrated, they hold a council to plan how they can destroy Jesus.

Jesus withdraws from the Pharisees to avoid causing further conflict. However, many people still follow him, and he heals all of them. The Scriptures note Jesus instructs them not to publicize these healings. Matthew interprets this as a fulfillment of Isaiah 42:1-3, which he quotes. Matthew summarizes the significance of this passage by stating that the Gentiles will trust in Jesus’ name.

Crime 3

In the historical accounts, the Pharisees accuse Jesus of using demonic power to heal a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute. Jesus refutes their accusation by pointing out the illogic of a divided kingdom and argues that only the power of God can cast out demons. He warns the Pharisees that their rejection of the Holy Spirit and attributing God’s works to Satan is a sin that cannot be forgiven. Jesus emphasizes that one’s words reflect their true nature and will be judged accordingly. He addresses the Pharisees as a generation of vipers and warns them of the consequences of their unbelief. This passage highlights the Pharisees’ opposition to Jesus and the importance of recognizing and accepting the work of the Holy Spirit.

“Pre”-concluding investigation

Jesus, who is mentioned in the ancient biblical historical records, responds to the Pharisees’ request for evidence of His identity (aka being the Messiah) by stating that He will only give them the sign of Jonah. He references the story of Jonah being in the belly of a fish for three days and nights as a prophetic incident that foreshadows his own death and resurrection. Jesus contrasts the belief and repentance of the Gentiles in the stories of Jonah and the queen of the south with the disbelief of the Pharisees, emphasizing that even greater than Jonah and Solomon was present before them. Jesus concludes by warning the Pharisees about the emptiness of their religious practices without the power of God, using the example of a man who was temporarily freed from an unclean spirit but later fell into a worse state. He states the Pharisees will also experience emptiness and greater spiritual bondage if they continue in their unbelief.

3. What were Jesus’ messianic miracles… ?

Jesus

In the captivating historical biblical accounts, one can vividly envision the awe-inspiring scenes of Jesus performing three extraordinary messianic miracles. The sweet aroma of faith and reverence permeates the atmosphere, as the touch of Jesus’ healing hands brings comfort and relief to those in need.

As previously mentioned, the proof of one being the Messiah centers on awe-inspiring miracles that the Messiah can only perform. With that in mind, let us now see the three messianic miracles that were exclusively accomplished by Christ Jesus. The first miracle is the healing of a leper, where Jesus restores the health of a man who has leprosy. The second miracle involves the casting out of a dumb demon, where Jesus frees a boy possessed by a mute demon. Last, the third miracle is the healing of a man born blind, where Jesus restores the sight of a person who has been blind since birth. These miracles show Jesus’ power and divine nature, highlighting his role as the Messiah.
