TL: DR A quick post glance:
- So what is “dermaplaning”… ?
- What about the pros…
- Wait there’s cons… ???
Sound juicy? Okay, Ladies. Let’s start!
1. So what is “dermaplaning”… ?
Dermaplaning is a minimally invasive procedure that shaves away the top layers of your skin. It can help reduce the appearance of acne scars or pitted skin. Some people get dermaplaning to remove unwanted hair (Clinic , 2022).
Dermaplaning, dermabrasion and microdermabrasion are skin resurfacing procedures. Each procedure uses different tools and takes off different amounts of skin. Dermaplaning uses a scalpel (knife) or razor to remove skin. Dermabrasion is a surgical procedure. Microdermabrasion is a nonsurgical procedure that uses an exfoliating blade to sand away your skin to smooth it and remove the look of scars (Clinic, 2022).
Now we have our definition of “Dermaplaning” — let’s explore real-life pros and cons.

2. What about the pros…
For starters, dermatological researchers at the Cleveland Clinic say Dermaplaning can help reduce the appearance of acne scars or other skin imperfections by revealing newer, undamaged skin. It can make your skin look younger; though it doesn’t stop the aging process. Some people also get Dermaplaning for hair removal. This is only a temporary fix because your hair will grow back (Clinic, 2022).
Researchers also say most people get the procedure on their face, but you can do it anywhere on your body (Clinic, 2022). At that, during the session your dermatologist or esthetician will skillfully use a sterile surgical scalpel at the correct angle to remove the top layer of old, dull skin, along with all your peach fuzz (Dermatology, 2019).
That being said, studies show that you can obtain a more healthy appearance after the first session of Dermaplaning, but best results occur after a series of treatments. Typically a series includes six treatments, with visible improvements after two or three treatments (Dermatology, 2019).

3. Wait there’s cons… ???
Dermaplaning is an invasive procedure (minimal) that is best completed by a plastic surgeon, dermatologist, or cosmetologist. The major cons come when someone is completing a home DIY Dermaplaning on their skin.
You now know this procedure reduces the appearance of fine lines, visible acne scars, and dark spots. The con is the procedure is recommended for all skin types except those with; acneic skin, cold sores, eczema, moles, freckles, skin tags, Psoriasis, skin burns, and skin rashes such as contact dermatitis (Clinic, 2022).
That being said, some researchers consider Dermaplaning a safe cosmetic procedure. But, it carries the following risks (especially if done at home and/or by someone with a lack of medical experience):
- Infection.
- Scarring such as keloid or hypertrophic (raised) scars.
- Skin discoloration (skin that turns lighter or darker than the surrounding skin).
Yikes!
